Northern Wanderers 10 – Billingham Lions 64.Match report by Huw Reynolds.
Billingham Lions came to Northern on Saturday sitting proud on top of Candy League 1. This was always going to be a tough ask for our lads but front up they most certainly did. The 64 – 10 score line in no way reflects the competitiveness of the match. Half way through the first half, the score was tied at 5 points apiece, with new recruit Cameron Horrocks driving over the line from a well-executed catch-and-drive. As Northern inevitably tired towards the end of the half however, Billingham, who were well drilled and familiar with each other’s play, executed their chances expertly. Wanderers had their chances though but the execution was not as good and Billingham’s defence was steadfast.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Northern having prolonged periods of pressure, but were thwarted by excellent defence. Inevitably, as our attack broke down, Billingham countered efficiently and their flying wingers and centres scored a number of breakaway tries. Northern continued to search for a score however. Their coach was extremely impressed by our grit and determination; his exact words were “Your guys are real fighters and never give in, fair play”. As dramatic licence would have it, as he voiced those very words, young dynamo Josh Vince-Irwin (surely, the coolest name in the club) ghosted over in the corner.
As well as No. 8 Cameron Horrocks, Callum Brock made his debut on the flank. Both debutants had superb games and were jointly awarded men-of-the-match. James Stansfield had a heroic match at fly-half and tackled everything that came his way, with his face bearing the scars of battle. He was awarded man-of-steel. In truth, all 15 of the team (we had no subs!) were excellent.
Tries: Cameron Horrocks
