Sat. 18th October 2014. Northern Wanderers vs Westoe II. Candy League 1 Home.
Northern went into this game in good spirits despite the heavy loss at Mowden Park the previous week, determined to register their first league win of the season. With good conditions the scene was set for Northern to exploit their expansive game against the side just above them in the league. Northern started strongly and showed good enterprise to take the game to Westoe and after 13 minutes thy were on the scoreboard when the ball was recycled well and moved wide for full back Connor Chamberlain to surge through a gap and outpace the defence for a try converted by scrum half Joss Pinsent. A reshuffle by Northern after this moved Joss Pinsent to full back and Ali Gray on at scrum half with Connor Chamberlain replaced. On18 minutes a long kick by Westoe was fielded inside the Northern half by right wing James Pattison who passed infield to supporting Joss Pinsent who went on a surging run and with the line in sight gave a perfect pass to wing Henry Kilpatrick who jinked over for a good try out wide. The conversion from Joss Pinsent was good. Northern continued to press and from a midfield scrum a worked blindside move set Joss Pinsent on another fine run and he eluded the Westoe defence to score a try which he converted himself. On 34 minutes another poor Westoe kick as fielded by Joss Pinsent who again eluded the defenders with another mazy run and then passed to Connor Chamberlain who outpaced everyone to score the bonus point fourth try under the posts. This was converted by Joss Pinsent. Northern lost concentration leading up to half time and a Westoe kick into the 22 was not dealt with and the ball turned over for their scrum half to dart over for an unconverted try on time. Half time score: Northern Wanderers 28 – Westoe 7.
Northern started the second half failing to keep their discipline giving away several penalties in succession, although there was a suspicion that the referee was trying to even up the game after disallowing a perfectly good Westoe try in the first half. Westoe finally crossed the line for a converted try on 43 minutes after a tap and drive by their big forwards. Normal service resumed and from the restart Northern reclaimed the ball and moved it wide for right wing James Pattison to make a good run into the Westoe 22 and only a last ditch tackle prevented a score. Westoe scrambled the ball into touch but from the 5m line out Northern won the ball cleanly and flanker Chris Ure swept around the blindside to score an unconverted try in the corner on 48 minutes. At this stage Northern were attempting to run the ball at every opportunity and on 57 minutes a fine run out of the 22 by Ali Gray made ground then he passed on to supporting replacement left wing Dan Matthews who made more ground before passing back inside to Connor Chamberlain who sprinted in for another try. This was converted by Joss Pinsent, now playing centre following the replacement of Dan Kerr. On 60 minutes another great break out of the Northern half was made by Chris Ure who set up the last defender before passing to Connor Chamberlain who raced in for his fourth try, converted by Joss Pinsent. Westoe did try to rally and with a little help from the referee who missed several knock-ons, they were given a penalty 10 metres from the line which they moved wide for their final score, a converted try on 68 minutes. Northern pressed Westoe back into their 22 from the restart and were given a 5m scrum on 72 minutes. Ali Gray took the ball wide from the scrum and scored a fine solo try which was converted by Joss Pinsent. Northern’s final try was a great effort on 75 minutes from a central scrum the blindside was again worked by Joss Pinsent who made good yardage before giving a try scoring pass to Henry Kilpatrick who touched down. The conversion was good by Joss Pinsent to leave the final score: Northern Wanderers 61 – Westoe 19.
