Sat. 20th September 2014. Northern Wanderers vs Blaydon Georgians. Candy League 1 Away.
Northern went into this game against the league leaders with confidence after good performances in the previous two games. Blaydon, with a bigger pack, started strongly pinning Northern back into their own 22 and got the first score from an unconverted push over try on 5 minutes. Northern responded positively and took the game into the Blaydon half, winning good lineout ball and working the touchline well. Northern’s pressing game was working and on 11 minutes Blaydon strayed offside and fly half Joss Pinsent reduced the deficit with a well struck penalty. Northern were unlucky not to score a try from a 5m line out when back row Will Harrison was just held up on the line. Blaydon conceded a further penalty for handling on the floor on 17 minutes which fly half Joss Pinsent kicked to give Northern a deserved lead. This shook Blaydon into life and they eventually started to put some phases together and moved the ball to their speedy back line. They broke the Northern defence on 23 minutes when a wide pass set their centre away for a converted try. Northern were still taking the game back to Blaydon and on 28 minutes Joss Pinsent was just wide with a long range penalty after Blaydon had infringed again. Blaydon then scored a fine converted try on 36 minutes when they fielded a long kick and ran the ball back at pace, eluding the chase defence. Northern were looking to close the half out without further scores when full back Connor Chamberlain was harshly sin binned when trying to intercept a pass on 44 minutes after the referee seemed to lose track of time. To make matters worse, Blaydon were allowed time to take the penalty and from a quick tap their big forwards drove over for a converted try in the last play on 45 minutes. Half time score: Blaydon Georgians 26 - Northern Wanderers 6.
Northern, started the half with 14 men and Blaydon were able to take advantage of this when 5 minutes into the half they moved the ball wide for the extra man to score an unconverted try in the corner despite some valiant last ditch tackling by the Northern cover defence. Northern responded well with Connor Chamberlain back from the sin bin they pressed Blaydon back and when they conceded a penalty this was kicked into touch for the line out close to the Blaydon line. The Northern line out was working well and from the catch and drive, lock Patrick Douglas was able to force his way over the line for a deserved unconverted try 10 minutes into the half. Blaydon came straight back at Northern and forced a penalty deep into the Northern 22 which they tapped and drove over for a converted try after 12 minutes. Northern took the game back to Blaydon from the restart and their pressing defence again caused Blaydon problems with one monster hit by number 8 Tom Harrison epitomising his man of the match performance. Blaydon scored another fine try when from a quick 22 drop out they moved the ball wide and their pacey wing went the length of the field for a converted try after 18 minutes of the half. Just after this a promising Northern attack was stopped when a looping pass from centre Dan Kerr to Connor Chamberlain was knocked down by the Blaydon wing when a try looked certain. The referee applied consistency and sin binned the Blaydon player. Northern continued to defend resolutely and with 10 minutes to go and Blaydon back to a full complement, Northern broke out with speedy Connor Chamberlain winning a kick and chase deep into the Blaydon half only to knock on when trying to pick the ball up in a position where a further kick would have given him a clear chance to score. 3 minutes from time Blaydon fielded a long kick and were again able to exploit their pace out wide when their left wing finished off another length of the field run with a converted try in the corner. Northern had the final say when a tapped penalty in the Blaydon 22 was moved to replacement wing Matt Brooks who powered over for a try right on time that was converted by Joss Pinsent. Final score: Blaydon Georgians 52 - Northern Wanderers 18.
