Northern went into this fixture against unbeaten Westoe with a reasonably strong team despite losing three forwards on the day to late cry offs and promotion to the first XV. Kicking into the wind in the first half Northern started well and were soon on the score sheet when scrum half Sam Storey kicked a penalty on 5 minutes. Westoe came back and Northern conceded a penalty in their 22 which Westoe took a scrum and picked up and drove over for a converted try on 9 minutes. Westoe added a further score on 15 minutes when sloppy play from Northern allowed Westoe to turn over ball and score an unconverted try out wide. Northern dug deep and showed enterprise when fly half Spike Strang kicked long out of the 22 and the supporting full back Connor Chamberlain was able to hack the ball on and win the kick and chase to the line for an unconverted try on 30 minutes. Northern pressed home their superiority straight from the restart and pressed Westoe back into their own half. Northern scored the best try of the game on 38 minutes when centre Jos Pinsent made a fine line break and fed supporting centre Neil Carter who powered through two defenders and touched down under the posts. The conversion was good by scrum half Sam Storey. Northern switched off from the re-start and a poor kick gifted possession to Westoe and despite what seemed to be an obvious forward pass they were awarded an unconverted try out wide on 39 minutes to leave the half time score: Northern Wanderers15–Westoe II17.
Starting the second half with the wind Northern’s game plan was to pin Westoe back in their own half however poor play from the re-start where the ball was driven into contact let Westoe pin Northern back into their own 22. Despite having several scrums with opportunities to kick long the wrong option was repeatedly chosen and Northern eventually only managed to clear for a line out on the 10m line following a penalty. Westoe made Northern pay for not catching at the line out and tapped ball was intercepted by the outstanding Westoe openside flanker who surged past the static Northern defence for a soft converted try on 47 minutes. Northern woke up and pressed Westoe back into their 22 following a series of powerful scrums. Northern were given a penalty 5m out and elected for the scrum again. Westoe were penalised for wheeling and from the tapped penalty number 8 Ian Brierley crashed over out wide for an unconverted try on 52minutes to close the scores to 4 points and leave Northern in reach of a bonus point. Northern continued to press and on 62 minutes scrum half Sam Storey was fractionally wide with a penalty attempt. Westoe were rolling on replacement forwards and their fresh legs began to tell when on 75 minutes Northern conceded a dubious penalty in the Westoe half and Westoe tapped an ran the ball back and scored an unconverted try out wide.
