This was a great advert for 15 man rugby from a young Northern team that played really well against a big Horden outfit. Northern were on the score sheet after 2 minutes when from turnover ball fast hands gave fly half Paddy Harper the chance to step his man and score under the posts. The try was converted by back row Chris Raffo. Horden kept the ball in their forwards from the restart and pressed Northern back in their own 22. From a Horden scrum the ball was picked up and driven over for converted try on 13 minutes to level the scores. Northern were trying to move the ball an tire the Horden pack and on 20 minutes some good handling set left wing David Bloxham away on an outside break for a good try. Northern continued to create good momentum through the pack and quick ball was moved wide right to full back Jos Pinsent who surged through a gap and scored a fine try on 28 minutes. Horden tried to get a grip on the game by keeping the ball tight as their big pack was dominating the scrums and they scored another try on 32 minutes when they drove over from a scrum close to the Northern line. Northern replied with another good series of drives from the Northern pack and the ball was moved right where great hands put right wing Dan Tiffin in for a quality try on 36 minutes. From the restart Northern retained possession and quickly moved the ball left to David Bloxham who accelerated away beating 3 or 4 Horden defenders for a fine solo try converted by Chris Raffo on 38 minutes. Horden to their credit bounced back from the restart and from a driving maul eventually crossed for a converted try on 40 minutes. Half time score: Northern Wanderers 29 – Horden 19.
Northern started the second half and continued to move the tiring Horden pack around the field, denying Horden any clean possession and creating several line breaks in the process. Northern had to wait until the 52nd minute for their next score when from a penalty line out 5m from the Horden line captain and prop Ian Brierley peeled off the drive and shot over in the corner for a deserved try. Northern continued to pile on the pressure and from a good drive the ball was moved to centre James Marwick who made a clean break and was supported by Paddy Harper who finished the move out wide for an unconverted try on 55 minutes. Northern created several more half chances but could not manage another score as Horden dug in and kept them out until the final whistle.
