Northern went into this game with confidence after the previous week’s performance determined to deliver against a Bishop team who had also won their first conference game. Kicking into the sun and wind the first half the game was tight for the opening exchanges with Bishop trying to keep the ball with their forwards and using a kicking game and Northern continuing their expansive game from the previous week. The Northern scrum again dominated despite having a lighter pack and on 8 minutes a good 8 to 9 move set left wing Rory Gibson away and he powered past a couple of defenders to touch down out wide. Bishop to their credit came back strongly and following some indiscipline in the Northern 22 when the ball was kicked away a quick tapped penalty saw the Bishop forwards blast over for a converted try on 18 minutes to put them in the lead. Northern bounced back on 22 minutes when a solid Northern scrum released the backs. Centre James Marwick made a good run and put supporting centre Harry Clark in for a try converted by wing Rory Gibson. Northern continued to show enterprise against the wind and several good runs, including one storming run from Prop and captain Peter Allsop, were thwarted by last-gasp Bishop defence. The breakthrough came on 31 minutes when a great half-break by centre Harry Clark was carried on and fast hands put supporting number 8 Lawrence Annis in for a try which was converted by wing Rory Gibson. Half time score: Northern Wanderers19–Bishop Auckland 7.
Northern started the second half with the elements in their favour and showed good focus when from the kick off the ball was moved to centre Harry Clark who stepped through the Bishop defence and passed inside to supporting full back Jos Pinsent who touched down for a try on 41 converted by wing Rory Gibson. Northern added a further try on 45 minutes when a Bishop 22 drop out was gathered by centre Harry Clark and passed to supporting centre James Marwick who drew the last defender and gave a well-timed return pass for centre Harry Clark to score a try converted by wing Rory Gibson. Northern made a mess of the re-start and Bishop secured the ball and moved it through the hands exploiting some poor Northern defence for an unconverted try in the corner to reduce the deficit on 47 minutes. Northern continued their pressure and added a further score on 50 minutes when securing good first phase ball from a line out on the Bishop 22. The backs moved the ball out left and wing Rory Gibson out-paced the defence then drew the last man and sent supporting centre Harry Clark in for a good unconverted try out wide. A good break by scrum half Ali Gray on 54 minutes gave centre James Marwick a deserved try when he took the ball on and outpaced the defence for a score converted by wing Rory Gibson. Northern scored another fine try from a line out when fast hands sent full back Jos Pinsent into space and his long pass sent wing Rory Gibson in for an unconverted try out wide on 62 minutes. Northern continued to turn the screw and scored another try on 70 minutes when good hands from hooker Ryan Moore sent wing Rory Gibson in for his third try which was converted by hooker Ryan Moore. Northern scored again when they were awarded a penalty in their 22 which was tapped and passed to fly half Spike Strang who made a half break and passed back inside to supporting scrum half Ali Gray who out-paced the defenders for a 60 metre try under the posts converted by hooker Ryan Moore on 72 minutes. Northern again lost concentration from the re-start and infringed giving Bishop a penalty which they tapped and ran with their forwards. Northern continued to infringe and eventually Bishop were able to score an unconverted try through their pack on 78 minutes. Northern had the final say when on 80 minutes centre James Marwick set off on a mazy run and committed the last Bishop defender to set supporting full back Jos Pinsent in for a super try that hooker Ryan Moore converted to leave the final score:Northern Wanderers 71 – Bishop Auckland 17.
