Northern went into this fixture with confidence and produced a performance of style and composure to start their Conference 3 campaign with an excellent win. The Northern pack showed their intent when at the first scrum they shunted the Durham pack back 3 metres and destroyed their front row to win an early penalty. They kicked for the line out and following good pressure the ball was moved to the midfield when debutant centre John ‘Boffle’ Irvine powered over for a try on 8 minutes converted by wing Rory Gibson. Northern added another score on 14 minutes following a good break by wing Rory Gibson who passed back inside where fast hands from supporting right wing James Pattison put full back Jos Pinsent over for an unconverted try out wide. Northern tried to be too clever from the re-start and had to settle for a scrum in their own 22. The ball was moved to fly half Spike Strang and his clearance kick was charged down by a very good Durham chase for the ball to be re-gathered by Durham and moved for a converted try under the posts on 18 minutes. Normal service was resumed when Northern scored another unconverted try on 24 minutes when scrum half Tommy Williams showed good awareness to take a quick penalty and touched down. The Northern pack continued to win good go-forward ball and from a good break by right wing Rory Gibson, fly half Spike Strang took the inside ball and put scrum half Tommy Williams in for a fine try on 30 minutes which was converted by wing Rory Gibson. A further good Northern handling move on 33 saw fly half Spike Strang feed full back Jos Pinsent who timed his pass to put wing Rory Gibson in for a try on 33 minutes that he converted himself. On 36 minutes a good Northern 8 to 9 blindside move resulted in another unconverted try out wide for full back Jos Pinsent. Northern scored the last try of the half when wing Rory Gibson made a fine outside break and fed supporting scrum half Tommy Williams for a try that wing Rory Gibson converted to leave the half time score: Northern Wanderers43–Durham City Saracens 7.
Northern started the second half with purpose with a good break by full back Jos Pinsent who gave a well-timed pass to supporting wing James Pattison who outpaced the defence for a fine try on 42 minutes under the posts converted by wing Rory Gibson. Northern added another score on 48 minutes when Rory Gibson (now playing in the centre) gave a super pass to supporting open-side James Clark who raced over for an unconverted try out wide. Centre James Marwick crossed for an unconverted try on 56 minutes following some slick handling by the backs to increase Northern’s lead. On 60 minutes Durham elected to go uncontested scrums after their props retired ‘broken’ which negated the Northern pack’s advantage and the game became scrappy. Northern did create some more scoring opportunities but did not score any further points until the 73rd minute when fly half Spike Strang showing good strength stripped the ball from a Durham player and raced in for a try under the posts that was converted by scrum half Tommy Williams. Durham did manage a consolation score right on time when following a series of penalties their forwards crashed over for a converted try to leave the final score:Northern Wanderers 67 – Durham City Saracens 14.
