The second of the festive fixtures featured a young Northern squad of players with many of last season’s colts and returning students making up the bulk of the team. The first half was a fairly even contest with Novos forward power edging the tight play and the young Northern team creating the half breaks and scoring opportunities. Good hands on 15 minutes sent full back Rory Gibson away on a good run and he sent in supporting wing Steve Marshall making a guest appearance for a try in the corner that was converted with a fine kick from back row Chris Raffo to give northern the lead. Further pressure on 18 minutes lead to a further score when scrum half Tommy Williams charged down a kick to touch down for a try converted by back row Chris Raffo. Northern continued to try to move the ball and great hands from quick ball set centre James Bullman on a powerful run for a fine try on 30 minutes converted by back row Chris Raffo. Northern were on the score sheet again when from a 5 metre scrum, scrum halfTommy Williams stepped the defenders to score his second try on 36 minutes converted by back row Chris Raffo. Half time score: Northern‘A’28–Novos 0.
Half time hospitality was appreciated by the players when mince pies and mulled wine were distributed. Northern made 8 changes for the second half but Novos were unable to use this to their advantage and conceded an unconverted try on 47 minutes when replacement centre Alex Turnbull crossed for a try after good interplay by the Northern forwards and backs. Northern scored again on 52 minutes when a quick tapped penalty was moved through the hands for right wing Eddie Gray to score an unconverted try. Further Northern pressure lead to another unconverted try when back row Sean Lightfoot crashed over for a score on 65 minutes. Centre Bas Strang scored a great individual try on 67 minutes when he picked up a loose ball in his own half and weaved past several Novos defenders to touch down out wide. Another good move lead to a fine try when prop Duncan Arnold made a good half break and had the vision to set up supporting back row Sean Lightfoot for his second unconverted try on 72 minutes. Northern had the last word when on 74 minutes following a good break by scrum half Tommy Williams he unselfishly (or as some said, jug avoidance as he was on a hat trick) gave the scoring pass to supporting lock Jack Symonds. The conversion was good from scrum half Tommy Williams and the referee blew for time to end an entertaining afternoon for the spectators. Final scoreNorthern ‘A’ 60 – Novos 0.
