16/17 1st XV. Consett 19 - 41 1st XV.

1st XV won 41 – 19 away to Consett. Match report thanks to Walter Ritchie:

Northern completed their 2016/7 season undefeated in 2017 with their 11th consecutive win and so comprehensively consolidated their promotion to North One East.

Conditions at Consett were fine if a little blustery and although the ground was hard in places Northern once again entertained, scoring 7 tries to 1 by Consett. It was Consett’s “Sponsors Day” so a larger than normal crowd witnessed the Northern backs at their best although the referee did have a problem with Northern's pace at times!! The pack stood up well to the considerable weight of the Consett 8 and second rows of Patrick Douglas and Laurence Annis did not give an inch and were ably supported by no 8 (2 tries) Chalky White.

Penalties given away did cause Northern problems and to some extent kept Consett in the game (with ex Northern full back Dougie Patterson in fine kicking form) but class will out and it seemed every time Northern had the ball they scored.

Scoring: Alex Clark (an outstanding skipper) try 5 mins,  Owen Clemett (18), Jack Tait (24), Chalky White (39),  Ali Gray converting 2 and with Consett kicking 4 penalties the half time score was 24 -12 to Northern.

Consett began the second half exerting tremendous pressure but as has happened recently Northern defence is greatly improved and once again the tries flowed. Chalky White (54), and 2 from Harrison Clark (62 and72 mins) with the ever reliable Donal Collins converting. Consett never gave up and in the last play crossed the white wash

We have scored over a thousand points during the season, including 164 tries, with Harrison Clark scoring 25 and Chalky White 18 and they actually scored our last 4 tries of the season!! Joe Young was second highest try scorer for the season with 21.

It has been an absolute pleasure to watch the team this season and write match reports and I personally look forward to the no doubt stiffer challenges next season and of course the bus trips.

Enjoy the summer.
