1st XV won 41 – 3 away to Ryton. Match report thanks to Walter Ritchie:
In conditions completely the opposite of those experienced at McCracken Park last Saturday the match was played on a dry ground with a blustery wind swirling across the pitch which did not help Northern's style of play which is to keep the ball moving from hand to hand. Due to several second-rows not being available Northern played 5 front row players initially which took a little time to settle down and Ryton still smarting from their thrashing earlier in the season the game lacked fluency and although Dan Matthews scored a try converted by Ryan Moore in the opening 5 minutes it was some time in fact before Northern advanced their score with tries by James Standfield, an individual effort, and then Harrison Clark after good backing up teamwork. Ryton replied with a penalty.
Keen to maximise the requirement of the 4 try bonus point Joe Young scored a try which Donal Collins improved literally straight from the second half kick-off and the Northern supporters relaxed. Ryton did not give up and were rather unfortunate they failed to score with the try line beckoning. Unfortunately Laurie Troke was red-carded for an innocent tip tackle, purely accidental, and the referee sadly, by the latest edict from the RFU, issued the card and he, after the game, consoled a very distraught Troke. Let us hope the disciplinary hearing can be sympathetic and give the minimum sentence. Further tries were scored by Harrison Clark (2) and Joe Young for Northern to run out by the score book convincing winners. Last week the forwards dominated the try scoring and this week all by the backs - funny old game!!!
Next week the first team have a week off before we entertain Stockton who by fair means or foul made us fight very hard to obtain a win at Stockton so please come along and support the team in their aim to continue their excellent run.
