1st XV lost 16 – 36 at home to Guisborough. Match report thanks to Walter Ritchie:
A very disappointing result for Northern in a game which they had hoped would move them out of the relegation battle but were well beaten by Guisborough which moves them into the league relegation zone.
Northern started well and soon went ahead with a fine try by Lester Bell converted by Donal Collins. Unfortunately Paddy Harper, playing possibly playing his final game for the club before he moves south, had to leave the pitch with a leg injury. Flanker Will Lawton replaced him with Chris Ure moving to the backs and Donal Collins to fly half. Guisborough replied with a try before Collins, with 2 further penalties, extended Northern's lead. Guisborough responded with 2 further tries when they twice turned over Northern’sball. Collins then kicked another penalty to leave the score 16-17 at half time.
The second half began disastrously for Northern when tackles fell off. Guisborough capitalised with good rugby and scored 4 further tries without reply. Spasmodic runs by both Don Fawcett and Lester Bell came to nothing and although skipper Edd Cawthorn worked hard to rally his team the breaks did not come which left Northern with a mountain to climb to get out of religation trouble.
