1st XV lost 18 – 19 away to Wheatley Hills. Match report thanks to Walter Ritchie:
Wheatley Hills settled more quickly than Northern and were soon ahead with an unconverted try. However, with the slope to their advantage and line out dominance Northern went ahead when, from a catch and drive, Edd Cawthorn levelled the scores with a try that Donal Collins improved. Collinsfollowed this up by scoring a try himself out wide after excellent handling between forwards and backs. Northern almost scored a third try when fly half Paddy Harper jinked through only to be tackled right on the line.
Northern started the second half leading 12 – 5 but were soon under pressure when they failed to clear and knocked on. The total dominance of the Wheatley pack, especially in the tight allowed them to score 2 converted tries to retake the lead. Disaster then struck on 50 minutes when Alex Clark, returning to the side after 10 weeks out with a broken hand, broke his arm! Two excellent penalties by Collins reduced the deficit to one point. Northern pressed for the win but two catch-and-drives were thwarted when a player became detached and was penalised! Then wing, Lester Bell in the act of scoring was tackled into touch on the corner flag. Sadly time ran out with Northern attacking strongly only to be denied when they deserved at least a draw
The home game against our oldest rivals Percy Park on Saturday is a must win game and after beating them in October confidence should be high.
