1st XV won 22 - 3 at home to South Shields Westoe. Match report thanks to Walter Ritchie:
In trying conditions and in trying league circumstances for each club this game was never going to be a classic, and so it turned out to be. Both sides looked nervous and Westoe soon went ahead with a penalty. Northern, with only 8 players who had performed so well against league leaders Doncaster, began to assert themselves and went ahead with a try by hooker Gareth Henderson after good handling by the forwardsand an injection of pace from openside Chris Ure. Westoe'spack were much heavier and pushed us back in the scrums but skipper no. 8 Edd Cawthorn cleared up, ably assisted by scrum half Paddy Fisher. Northern scored their second try bywing Dom Fawcett who was put clear by good handling along the line.
A harsh sin-binning for centre Dean Holliday just before half time reduced Northern to 14 for the start of the second half but with the elements in their favour Northern soon made the game safe with an excellent try after a fine individual chip and chase by Paddy Harper. Westoe’s heads did not go down butNorthern's 8 successfully defended numerous driving maulsnegating this ploy. With time running out and with that critical important bonus point for 4 tries (a rare occurrence) in sight, fly half Harper put centre Harrison Clark in under the posts for a try which Harper improved.
A much needed and important win to set up a really vital game on Saturday at Wheatley Hills where a bonus point win would be the icing on the cake - naturally supplied by Fortnum and Mason ! Please we need your support and we can guarantee you will be back in time to see the England game on Sunday!!
