1st XV lost away to West Hartlepool 37 - 20. Match report thanks to Walter Ritchie:
Northern, with players back from injury and unavailability, made 8 changes to the team which lost at Westoe to play at West Hartlepool and this was evident when they were soon 13 points down with West scoring two unconverted tries and a penalty. Now settled down Northern were denied opening points when a penalty was missed. The drop out was bungled by Northern and in a flash West went further ahead with a converted try. Ali Gray made a determined run out of defence which resulted in James Powell scoring a fine try - the first one West had conceded this season.
West soon scored at the beginning of the second half only for Northern to reply with one of their own when James Nicholl scored after an excellent catch and drive from a 5 meter line out (if only England could have replicated that later !!!). West came on song and superb handling by their backs saw them increase their lead with two further tries, one of which was improved. In the last 5 minutes Northern scored two further tries when Ali Gray (who all afternoon was a thorn in the side of West) sprinted from his 22 to score and Alex Clark showing “I won't be stopped” attitude also scored from long range to obtain our first bonus point of the season with 4 tries. The final score 37 -20 did rather flatter West and we can lookwith renewed confidence for our home game against Driffield on Saturday.
