1st XV lost at home to Dinnington - a game we could have won. Match report thanks to Walter Ritchie:
Sadly our first home game of the season against Yorkshire visitors Dinnington ended with a 25 – 6 defeat. The recurring problem of finishing promising attacks off once again reared its ugly head as happened last season. Playing with frequent heavy showers at their backs Northern opened confidently but failed with 2 penalty misses by the normally reliable Donal Collins and a glaring overlap was also wasted. This seemed to deflate the side allowing the heavy Dinnington pack to assert its authority and two penalties were kicked. Northern did reply with one of their own before Dinnington went further ahead when, after a controlled drive, they scored a converted try. Again Donal Collins reduced the deficit with a penalty.
Sunshine greeted the teams in the second half and this spurred Northern into action and they took the game to Dinnington. Alas two first class breaks by Alex Clark resulted in disappointment when on the first occasion quick ball was not forthcoming and then when Dom Fawcett, our number-one finisher failed to take the pass and a seven point try was thrown away. One hates to say it but the ugly head of failing to finish raised its head again!! Replacements Phil Ludford and Damian Martinez bolstered the side and for long periods we pressured but Dinnington broke away and punished us with two tries, one of which was converted. This was a very winnable game and the second half performance was most encouraging so beware Westoe - we are on our way.
Finally a special word for Owen Clemett whose performances at scrum half, often in difficult circumstances, have been excellent and we wish him well when he goes off to university at Cardiff. He will naturally want to settle in but will make himself available for Northern if required.
