Hats off to the 18 players who undertook the long journey to South Yorkshire to play Dinnington, the undefeated league leaders. It was quite clear from the onset that the home side were many kilograms (or about 2 stones) a man heavier than our pack and they would dominate both scrum and lineout – and they certainly did! Four of Dinnington’s 8 tries resulted from a penalty kick to the corner and then a well drilled catch and drive to the line. It was very difficult to defend such a tactic especially with the weight disadvantage.
Northern’s cause was not helped when we lost the consistent Barry Blackburn who came off with a suspected broken nose after 2 minutes.
By half time Dinnington were 35 – 0 ahead with 5 converted tries. Finally the onslaught was quelled and in the last 15 minutes Northern scored 3 tries by Douglas, Weeman and Donal Collins who also converted all the tries. In the last minute Dom Fawcett was held up just short of the try line so we were denied a 4 try bonus point!!
It is easy to make excuses but only 9 players who played a draw with Bradford & Bingley the previous week were available on Saturday which resulted in wholesale changes to the team – but as I said at the onset all credit to the 18 who played in this match.
