The smiles on the exhausted faces of the 18 players involved in a thrilling win, 13 – 0, at Malton & Norton said it all – we had moved a further step away from the wrong end of the league. After three close losses on the trot we came through with a last minute penalty by the ever reliable Donal Collins.
We began the game well with an early Donal penalty and after 15 minutes a planned lineout resulted in Pat Power “powering” over for a converted try. Although Malton kicked a penalty Northern’s tackling smothered any attempts by them to expand their attacks and at half time Northern led by 10 – 3.
In the second half several scoring opportunities fell to Northern. Scrum half Ali Gray, making an excellent full debut for the club, made a 20 yard break only to be tackled on the line. James Marwick, on his return to 1st XV duties scythed through the Malton defence only to be denied a score by a last ditch tackle.
The judicious use of the replacements however paid dividends and although Malton equalised with a converted try Northern was the team finishing strongly and pressing to win the game which they did with that final penalty.
This win and the return of various squad players will give the team confidence to finish the season with a flourish.
Finally, our last bus trip of the season is to Driffield in 3 weeks time so why not consider joining the team for an early spring journey to the Yorkshire Wolds with a buffet, not quite Fortnam and Mason, and wine, not quite Berry Bros. but with craik of the very highest order! Book your seat now!!
