Yes, Christmas came early for Northern with a convincing win against second in the table, Huddersfield YMCA, by 19 – 8.
Northern started well and after two well taken penalties by Graham Jardine they dominated the game and it was no surprise when Northern went further ahead with a try from Paddy Harper.
Huddersfield were unable to develop their game due to ferocious tackling by Northern but just after half-time they did put a score on the board with a penalty.
With Northern newcomer Robert Kinnell (a useful addition to the squad) yellow-carded Northern was able to go further ahead with a third penalty from Graham Jardine. Northern’s captain, Alex Clark, was leading the team by example and further pressure resulted in a line-out in the Huddersfield 22 metre area from which the Northern pack was allowed to score a try (claimed by Pat Power).
Huddersfield did not give in but when in possession they were constantly pressurised into making mistakes. As a consolation they did manage to score a try wide-out in the last minute of the game.
This will give Northern confidence for the New Year and with several players returning from injuries the prospects are good.
Happy Christmas to all and success in 2014.
