If you have to defend as amazingly as Northern did against Alnwick you deserve to win. One has to be proud of the Northern commitment during the last 15 minutes of the game to keep out the Alnwick side who literally threw everything at them including the kitchen sink.
Northern began well and the ever reliable Donal Collins put them ahead with a penalty and they controlled the game although the scrum was under pressure, especially when Jon Coffey left the field with slight concussion.
Two great chances were created only to be penalised 5 metres from the try line. Alnwick equalised with a penalty right on half-time, very much against the run of play, with a penalty from Bird.
Alnwick started the second half determinedly running at every opportunity. Northern weathered the storm and hit back with a try right off the training track. Paddy Harper created a gap for David Bloxson to break through untouched to score under the posts – Donal converted.
Two further penalties by Bird closed the gap but again Donal responded with a 40 metre penalty into a slight breeze.
Alnwick were not to be denied and spent the last 15 minutes pounding the Northern line, especially with an extremely dominant scrum. Tackle after tackle went in led by James Hamer playing out of position at scrum half – a truly man of the match performance.
Other league results have not entirely lifted the relegation cloud so next Saturday all support is needed at Northern to see off Wheatley Hills. The team deserve your presence if only to applaud the backs to the wall defence at Alnwick!
