This was one of those games in which Northern played poorly yet won. Within the first 2 minutes an interception try by Northern old-boy, Ali Womack, gave Sheffield an early lead but this was countered with an interception try (and conversion) after 6 minutes by Graham Jardine. Five minutes later Harry Clark scored a try, Sheffield scored after 20 minutes but then Alex Clark broke through several Sheffield tackles, ran around the full-back and scored (converted by Graham Jardine) to give Northern a 19 - 10 half-time lead. Northern's forwards took more control in the second half with two tries from Kieran Dannatt (one converted by Graham Jardine), but two tries from Sheffield gave them a bonus point. One spectator said this was a game in which tackling was optional. Northern gave a considerable amount of possession away with unsuccessful flip passes, miss-directed kicks and poor line-out communication - hopefully this is now out of the system.
