Northern’s first away trip took them back down the familiar A1, A1M, M62 route to visit the league’s newcomers Huddersfield YMCA. We had been informed about YM’s excellent facilities and were not disappointed – the very large pitch should have been just to our liking. However in typical Northern fashion it took 40 minutes of playing to get the coach trip out of the team’s legs.
Northern started well and were rewarded with a penalty after just 2 minutes. Both sides were trying to play open rugby and YM levelled the scores after 12 minutes with a penalty. This was the start of a significant period of pressure from YM whose backs broke through Northern’s gain line almost at will. After 30 minutes YM’s winger scored a well-worked try, and then YM followed this with a break from the kick-off to within 10 metres of Northern’s line. YM possession and recycled ball produced another try wide out to give YM a deserved 17 – 3 lead.
At this stage Northern’s pack started to dominate and Kiaran Dannatt forced himself over for a try just before half time – half time score 17 – 8.
With Northern’s pack now dominant a second try from Kiaran Dannatt and two penalty kicks took Northern into a 17 – 19 lead with time running out. However the game was not over and a penalty from YM took them into the lead only for Northern to have the last word with a penalty to take the lead, 20 – 22 and win the match."
